revitalising the Kimberley Bike Park
In 2022 a group of passionate directors and bike enthusiasts brought forward a suggestion that we could look to work on revitalising the Kimberley Community Bike Park on Rotary Drive. The current bike park was built 15 years ago by the City of Kimberley and a group of users at that time. There has been no formal partnership or committee to maintain the Bike Park and over time it has deteriorated. Inspired by recent upgrades to facilities in Fernie, Elkford and further afield in British Columbia, we have a vision to revitalise the Bike Park by rebuilding the existing dirt jumps, adding a paved pumptrack, expanding parking and landscaping the existing area. Our goal is to do this in a sustainable manner and create an ongoing maintenance program in collaboration with the City of Kimberley to offer an incredible facility for this City's booming bike population.
Current concerns
OVERVIEW OF THE PROJECT PLAN - 3 PHASES
What have we done so far?
2022: first year of the project
- Summer 2022 - Created a bike park committee under the umbrella of the Kimberley Trails Society.
- Ran a community engagement survey to better understand expectations and concerns of the existing bike park.
- Worked with the City of Kimberley to create an actionable plan moving forward.
- Delivered a presentation to Council seeking support for the revitalisation project.
- Worked with Common Ground Trails to create a Concept Drawing for the area.
- Started fundraising initiatives and grant applications. To date; we have hosted a hugely successful Shoulder Season Movie Night at Centre 64 , raffled off a Fat Bike and Ski Package.
- We continue to apply for grants and seek additional funding.
2023: First grants awarded & phase 1 initiated
Winter 2023
- With Support from the City of Kimberley, we applied for the Outdoor Active Recreation Grant from Columbia Basin Trust for Phase 1, Rebuilding of the Dirt Jumps.
- We held another successful Spring Shoulder Season Movie Night fundraiser with a lot of shenanigans and fun to be had!
- A Grant in the amount of $64,000 awarded to the City of Kimberley for Phase 1 - Building of the Dirt Jumps
- Site Preparation completed in partnership with the City of Kimberley and BC Wild Fire Service.
- A really big, big day of volunteers coming together to clean up and haul away debris.
- Contractors hired to level the mound adjacent to the Skate Park and regrade the entire area.
- Lots of Bike Park Committee meetings during the summer to pour over draft plans, consider how In Kind resources could help out with costs and begin to reach out to potential contractors.
- We were invited to apply for the second stage of the BC Destination Development Fund in hopes to secure funding for a Paved Pump Track.
- We continued to liaise with our City of Kimberley contact to begin our draft of the Request for Proposal for the construction of the Dirt Jumps, Phase 1 of the Bike Park Revitalization Project.
- Final touches of a Request for Proposal sent to City of Kimberley for approval to secure a contractor for next year!
- Preparing Shoulder Season 3 Movie Night announcements!
- AND OUR MOST RECENT UPDATE!! The Province of BC has awarded Kimberley Trails Society with the BC Tourism Destination Development Grant in the amount of $350,000 for the construction of a Paved Pumptrack to be located next to the Skate park and above the future Dirt Jumps. This is a huge contribution towards providing the community with a low barrier, accessible outdoor facility meant for bikes, scooters, skateboards and even wheelchairs!

FUNDING GOALS- WHERE WE ARE AT
When the Bike Park Committee began applying for grants for the Kimberley Bike Park Revitalization Project, it was conceptualized and proposed to City Council as a Three Phase project.
We projected the estimated budget at $450,000 to rebuild the existing dirt jumps, construct a paved Pump Track similar to communities like Elkford and Pemberton for example.
The purpose of the Paved Pump Track, although a more expensive option, was to provide an outdoor facility that would be low maintenance, support “all wheels” and follow the trend of bike Parks emerging in other communities across the province.
The Third phase would be reserved for green space improvements of the surrounding area along Lion’s Way trail and the adjacent Skate Park.
